IN CHARACTER
Character Name: Mary
Canon: Ib
Canon Point: After Mary and Ib get separated from Garry, but before the latter is about to go into the Doll Room
In-Game Tattoo Placement: on the back of her neck, hidden under her long blond hair
Current Health/Status: Technically alive and in good health, though this may change should any canon updates occur in the future.
Age: Unknown, but has the appearance and mannerisms of about 9 or 10 years old.
Species: Painting?? Appears human, though.
History: Here and Here! Also, I'm gonna throw a link to the Endings page which helps describe in more detail some of the things that can happen with Mary depending on choices made in the game. At the moment however, there isn't one that affects her current canon point, at least for now.
CRAU History and Impact: N/A
Personality: When Ib first meets Mary in the art gallery, Mary comes across as a very cheerful young girl, happy to have found someone else that had ended up lost in the gallery too. She's cute and bright, complimenting the color of Ib's rose as being such a pretty shade of red, though she also shows herself to be childish by comparison, being rude with insults or making fun of Garry when she meets them, and making ridiculous claims and demands such as wanting their rose (which, is tied to their very life while in the gallery) simply because she likes the color blue more.
Nonetheless, Mary is a cute girl when you first meet her. She says silly things and can be a little impatient, but she's just so friendly that it's hard to try to deny her charm. She also shows that she can be a caring person too, telling Ib not to worry--we will get through this together, we won't leave you behind! Even though you may have only just met her, she can quickly become very attached to you if given the chance, even being nice to the denizens of the art gallery that threaten the livelihoods of those who come in contact with them, though her opinion on some things being "cute" might be debatable. Regardless, she acts like just about any other child you might meet.
Well...no, that's not entirely true. Cheerful as she may be, Mary appears to be hopelessly naive sometimes, especially when it comes to what is considered normal behavior. She doesn't seem to realize that being so dependent on someone that you just met might not be particularly healthy, and she can be incredibly jealous sometimes of the bond that Ib and Garry have together, stressing over the idea that Ib likes Garry more than her. She even becomes upset at the idea that Ib would choose Garry over her if Ib could only help two of them to leave the art gallery, though this is largely due to her true origins of being a painting--leaving with Ib is the only way she can go to the real world.
Once the truth about her becomes known, Mary can become extremely hostile. She doesn't hesitate to threaten others, and in some endings of the game, is even willing to allow someone to die in order to reach her goal of escaping the art gallery. She'll gleefully tear apart Garry's rose in some of the endings, singing a childish song of "loves me, loves me not" as if there's nothing bad about what she's doing. Or, when things are not going her way, she'll start screaming and pitching a fit, brandishing the nearest sharp object she can get her hands on to attack or even kill whatever is standing in her way of happiness.
At first, this may make her seem like an incredibly cruel and unsympathetic person, but at the heart of it, she's only doing it because she's so desperate to leave the art gallery and go outside. Sacrificing someone is the only way for her to escape, even if it means having to sacrifice a friend, even if she doesn't really want to resort to such actions. Depending on just how attached and loyal she has become to someone, she may even give up on the idea of leaving them behind... but only if that means they stay behind with her rather than leaving her alone, because a good friend would stay together with one another no matter what, right? At least, that's what it says in the books she's read about the subject, as they're her only source of information on how to make friends.
All in all, at first, Mary seems like a cheerful young girl. But as we all know, first appearances are often deceiving. Underneath her happy exterior, there is a dark, lonely side to her that wants to have friends, and is often willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Despite being a painting and not a human in canon, she has no known supernatural abilities. At least, not outside of the gallery that is: inside of the art gallery, during one or two endings when confronted by Ib, it's shown that her emotions can manipulate her surroundings. When she screams at Ib (and possibly Garry) to get out, it causes red cracks to appear across the ground, emphasizing her anger towards them. Her appearance in the real world in the Together Forever ending also somehow altered the memories of everyone there into believing that she was real the whole time, but it's hard to say if that's something that she is knowingly capable of doing. Also, she's incredibly weak to and terrified of fire: the only way to kill her in most endings of the game was to set her and/or the painting of her ablaze. After all, being born from a painting, she very quickly burns up into a pile of ash within minutes.
Inventory:
- A yellow rose. On closer inspection, one might discover that it's a fake.
- Palette knife. Used by artists, but has a surprisingly sharp edge to it.
- A strange doll that she's fond of. It's blue with black hair and red eyes, as seen in her hands in the linked image. It's a little creepy and might make you think it's capable of moving if you're not looking at it. But why would it? It's just a doll.
- "How To Make Friends": a book all about just what the title says.
- crayons and paper to draw on

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Yes
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: Have you seen anime like Paranoia Agent or Perfect Blue? Or games like SOMA, Silent Hill, Layers of Fear, etc. that have a theme about questioning one's reality or existence? Those stories tend to end up being my favorite when I play them. However, I also really like the occasional body horror and the stuff found in rpg horror games, such as Angels of Death, The Witch's House, and even this canon I'm playing from as it's interesting seeing what can be done with the horror genre in this style.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Emetophobia, or any other particular descriptions involving bodily waste other than blood or tears.
Additional Information: Nothing that I can think of!
